What happens when you add particles to a lollypop? You get Twinkle-Sprinkle:

Available On Patreon

TwinkleSprinkle features six VJ loops showcasing a dancing character, releasing a stream of hypnotic particles. The character is backlit by a colorful scheme that matches the particles. You’ll receive two dances from both frontal and side perspectives, an infinitely rotating character, and a close-up loop with particles for creative mixing.

The bonus Resolume project is available too, enhanced with variations to the original clips, coloring suggestions, and cloning arrays that will get you up to speed right away. Just hit those columns, and you’ll instantly get a mesmerizing mix.

TwinkleSprinkle will be available for superfans on Patreon throughout August 2024.

Creation Process

Continuing with Unreal Engine’s Metahuman characters, I began by adding particles using a Niagara system, following a tutorial. The character is animated with motion capture data, and the particle system emits from its hands. The particles change color over time within a cool color scheme. To match the character to the particles, I positioned four rotating rectangle lights in different colors at the back, which reflect light onto the character’s body, revealing its curves. These lights rotate 360 degrees, animating the color on the character in a seamless loop. I also added a large white rectangle light at the front to create a milky, reflective look.

I chose two motion-capture dances and rendered each one with a transparent background, both from a front and side perspective, so I could compose them interestingly later in Resolume. From another motion-capture data, I looped an animation where the character rotates seamlessly. I rendered the last VJ loop as a close-up of one of the dances because I felt the particles deserved a close-up to showcase their beauty, even though such a VJ loop would be limited in its compositional use.

Resolume Arena Project

I had some fun composing the front and side perspectives into interesting compositions. I applied cloners and watched the character multiply itself in a hypnotic trail. I layered the close-up loop over the others and was happy I decided to render it after all.

I then played with colors, adding the Hue effect to turn it from cool to warm color schemes. I also used the Colorize effect to achieve new color combinations that I hadn’t thought of before. I lined up all of the colorizing suggestions so you could pick the ones you like and easily copy-paste them to the loops, layers, or the project to match the event’s colors or lighting.

Creating the project is where all the ideas I had come to fruition, and it’s also where I discover new ideas for my next creations. I’m happy to share the project as a bonus to the VJ loops, and I believe that close inspection of it will help superfans understand more about what can be done with these VJ loops and inspire new tricks for your own projects.
